선린상업학교 야간을 졸업한 김수영은 일본 유학 시기에 학교 선배인 이종구에게 얹혀 살았다. 이 이종구와 잘 알고 있던 것이 후일의 배우자가 되는 김현경이었다. 셋이 복잡하게 얽힌 관계였는데, 김현경의 아버지의 첩이 김현경의 아버지 외의 남자와의 관계로 낳은 사람[12]이 이종구(1990년 사망)였고, 유년 시절부터 알던 이종구를 아저씨라고 부르던 김현경은 그동안 교제하던 시인 배인철이 요절한 후 이종구의 소개로 사귀게 된 것이 이종구의 막역지우이자 후배인 김수영이었다
